The athletes we coach in their forties and fifties rarely lack effort — they lack recovery capacity.
After 40, how well you recover, not how hard you train, becomes the ceiling on your progress. Manage
recovery well and you can keep getting stronger for decades. Here’s how we do it.
Sleep is the highest-leverage recovery tool
Nothing in a supplement aisle competes with seven to nine hours of quality sleep. Sleep is when the
adaptations from training actually consolidate. If you’re training hard and sleeping six hours, the
fix isn’t a new program — it’s an earlier bedtime. Protect it the way you protect a client meeting.
Soreness is feedback, not a scoreboard
Delayed-onset muscle soreness tells you a stimulus was novel — not that the session was effective.
Chasing soreness leads to under-recovery. We watch performance trends instead: if your lifts are
progressing week to week, recovery is adequate, sore or not.
Build in deloads before you need them
A deload is a planned week of reduced volume or intensity — typically every four to eight weeks for
masters athletes. It lets accumulated fatigue dissipate so the next block starts fresh. Skipping deloads
is the most common reason driven professionals stall or get hurt in their forties.
Manage the whole stress load
- Hard work travel week? Pull training volume back; don’t add to the deficit.
- Protein toward the upper end of 0.7–1.0 g/lb of target bodyweight supports tissue repair.
- Easy aerobic work — a walk on the Del Mar bluffs — aids recovery without adding fatigue.
The payoff
The ACSM is clear that consistent resistance training preserves muscle, bone, and function with age.
The clients who train for the long game — recovering as deliberately as they train — are the ones still
setting personal records at 55. That’s the approach we coach at Self Made Del Mar.
