North County clients rarely lift in a vacuum. They surf at Cardiff, run the Torrey Pines
State Reserve trails, ride the coast, or chase kids around the Del Mar Fairgrounds on weekends.
A strength program that ignores that activity will leave you flat — or hurt. Here’s how we
balance strength work against an already-active lifestyle.
Recognize that recovery is shared
Your body has one recovery budget, and surfing, running, and lifting all draw from it. The
NSCA’s guidance on concurrent training is straightforward: when strength and endurance compete
in the same week, you protect the priority and schedule the other around it. If a Saturday
trail run matters to you, we don’t put a heavy lower-body session on Friday.
Schedule hard and easy days deliberately
- Hard strength + hard cardio on the same day, separated by hours, beats stacking them on back-to-back days.
- Keep at least one genuinely easy day — a walk on the bluffs, mobility, nothing that taxes recovery.
- Plan around the swell and your races, not the other way around. We adjust weekly when a client tells us a dawn patrol session is coming.
Strength makes the rest of it better
Done right, lifting is the foundation that makes surfing, running, and riding feel easier and
last longer. Stronger hips and a more resilient posterior chain reduce the low-back fatigue that
ends a long session in the water. Single-leg strength work directly transfers to trail running
on uneven Torrey Pines terrain. We program with that transfer in mind rather than treating
the gym as separate from your life.
Watch the early-warning signs
Persistent soreness, a stalled performance trend, poor sleep, or a resting heart rate that
creeps up are signals to pull back volume, not push through. The ACSM consistently emphasizes
progressive, recoverable loading. For an active North County adult, the skill isn’t doing more
— it’s sequencing it so everything fits.
